Head-to-head comparison · by the team at All-Terrain Motorsports, Grand Junction & Rifle CO · updated 2026-08-20
These are the two adventure bikes our customers cross-shop hardest, and they represent two philosophies of the same idea. Both live on our floors — we're a Yamaha and Husqvarna dealer — and both have carried riders from our parking lot to Moab the hard way.
The Ténéré 700 is the simple, rugged favorite: Yamaha's beloved 689cc CP2 twin, basic long-travel suspension, minimal electronics, and a reputation for being unkillable. The Norden 901 is the premium play: a bigger 889cc twin with roughly 30 more horsepower, sophisticated rider modes and traction control, and plusher touring comfort.
| Yamaha Ténéré 700 | Husqvarna Norden 901 | |

| Character | Simple, rugged, dirt-first | Refined, powerful, tour-ready |
| Electronics | Minimal (switchable ABS) | Ride modes, off-road TC/ABS |
| Best at | Rough dirt, reliability | Big-mile comfort + capability |
| Price position | The value benchmark | Premium — and equipped like it |
The Ténéré's pitch is that there's less to break and less to think about — carbureted-era simplicity with modern reliability, and a bike you can drop on a rocky two-track, pick up, and keep riding. The Norden answers with genuinely useful electronics: off-road ABS and traction modes that make a heavier, more powerful bike friendlier when the surface turns loose, plus real wind protection and comfort for the highway miles between the good stuff.
Our benchmark loop says it all: highway out of Grand Junction, Unaweep Canyon's sweepers, then gravel and rough doubletrack toward the Uncompahgre Plateau. The Ténéré feels most at home the moment pavement ends; the Norden is the better companion for the 200-mile days that bracket the dirt. For the famous Rimrocker Trail to Moab, both are proven — pack light either way.
Buy the Ténéré if the dirt matters more than the distance and you love mechanical simplicity — it's the bike you'll never worry about. Buy the Norden if you ride big mixed-surface days and want the power and comfort to enjoy all of them. We stock and service both in Grand Junction.

The Ténéré 700's lower price, simpler controls, and forgiving power make it the easier first ADV — though the Norden's electronics genuinely help newer riders when conditions get loose. Seat height fits differently on every rider; sit on both in-store.
Yes — both are proven on the Rimrocker with proper tires and light packing. The rocky sections reward the Ténéré's simplicity; the highway stretch home rewards the Norden.
